Valley Heritage Radio The People’s Voice of the Ottawa Valley CJHR – 98.7 FM – Valley Heritage Radio – is the Ottawa Valley’s first, non-profit, community owned and operated, full-powered, volunteer-run, English-language radio station. The 13,000-watt broadcast signal covers most of the Ottawa Valley, while the world is served via live Internet streaming. Our studios are located just east of the Town of Renfrew, in Horton Township, at 3009 Burnstown Road. The station offers the “traditional” sounds of the country, bluegrass, fiddle and Ottawa Valley music, with a self-imposed mandate to focus programming on Canadian content, with the aim of promoting Canadian and local talent as much as possible. Variety is the key word when it comes to the programs you’ll find, as you’ll not only find country, bluegrass and fiddle, but you’ll hear rock and roll, folk, blues, easy listening, east coast, indigenous, Celtic, gospel, and so much more. We also focus on agriculture, seniors, and all things local, in addition to old-time radio shows for those who love the idea of relaxing to the sounds of yesteryear. What weaves the fabric of the station together is a focus on all things heritage – for this beautiful country of ours, and in particular our own part of the world, the amazing Ottawa Valley. CJHR, like any community project, will survive and flourish only with community involvement and support. It is up to the public as individuals, businesses, municipalities, organizations, community groups and corporations to mold the station into the entity you wish it to be – that is, a reflection of the unique community in which you reside. • Devon Black

Production Assistant < Back Devon Black Production Assistant Devon is a quiet individual who hails from the small town of Cobden and assists with the technical production of material the station creates for airplay. Devon studied audio engineering at college, and has applied his skill and passion at Valley Heritage Radio for more than a decade. He also hosts a country and bluegrass music program, in addition to voicing newscasts and our popular ‘Recipe of the Day’. He is most recognized by his terrifyingly all-natural evil laugh that strikes fear into the hearts of friends and foes alike. Do not fret however, he’s harmless. We think. • Sheila Vandekemp

db2c3766-13e4-4029-a1f0-642fbfb49139 OUR DJs < Back Sheila Vandekemp I was born in Apple Hill, Ontario (Glengarry County), and grew up with 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Marriage brought me to Renfrew County in the 1960s. First to Beachburg and then in 1985 to a dairy farm in the Barr Line area between Cobden and Douglas. We presently farm with our son Scott. I have served as president of the Renfrew County Holstein Club and sat on numerous committees within the community. I volunteer for the Cancer Society and at a local retirement home. I have always had a love for country music. Many of my relatives had musical talents, but that gene escaped me! But I did learn to step dance. I started as a volunteer receptionist at Valley Heritage Radio, and I’d always dreamed of becoming a DJ, so when the opportunity came along, I took the plunge. It was a huge learning curve (I am still learning) but no regrets. I am grateful to Valley Heritage Radio for allowing me this opportunity to fulfil a dream. It is a pleasure and privilege to share country music with our listeners. Program The Sheila Show Sheila Vandekemp is the host of The Sheila Show heard every Sunday morning from 7 to 10 a.m. Sheila showcases country artists, mostly from the 1950s. Every now and then you will hear a waltz, a bluegrass tune and maybe a surprise song. And, as one of the biggest Merle Haggard fans on the planet, Sheila may even spin a Merle tune from time to time. • Tony Bove

3e779281-3a6b-4134-aac5-15259a6d422c OUR DJs < Back Tony Bove On any given Thursday night, Tony is praised by a handful of listeners, and cursed at by hundreds of others. Why, you ask? Because as our bingo caller, the winners love him. Those who didn’t have any luck don’t quite see him in the same light. In fact, he’s been told many times that he “didn’t call the right numbers,” while his response is always “you didn’t have the right card.” Armed with a great sense of humour and a zest for life, Tony is the man behind the microphone for one of VHR’s most popular programs. And even though the show is quite scripted because of time restraints, his personality still manages to shine through. Tony also volunteers his time and talents for VHR as a musician, and when he’s not performing around the Valley, he’s sharing his musical passion with the Capital City Chorus as music director. Tony and his husband Andy live near Pakenham where they enjoy the serenity, connection to nature, and sense of community that come with rural living in the Ottawa Valley. Bingo Under the “B” – Be Sure. If you’re a bingo fan, be sure to pick up your cards and have that dial locked to 98.7 every Thursday at 7 o’clock sharp for Valley Heritage Radio/Arnprior Lions charity bingo. For only 6 dollars a card, you can take part and have a chance to win, as we give away a minimum of $2,000 each week! Plus many special weeks with even more prize money. Join caller Tony Bove each Thursday for your chance to win! Previous Next
