About the event

Fred Blackstein has over 50 years of wilderness experience as a keen outdoorsman, master canoeist and leader of Renfrew County’s civilian Search and Rescue Team (SAR).  He has paddled much of the Ottawa River, many of its tributaries and served on the Heritage River Designation Committee with founding chairman, the late Len Hopkins. At Fred's request, Elder William Commanda, who was considered the spiritual leader of the Algonquin Nation, served as Honorary Chair until his passing. "Grandfather William" often noted that, rivers are the veins of Mother Earth and this will be the theme of the evening's presentation. For his SAR efforts, and other volunteer activities, for which he is well known, Fred was awarded Canada’s highest honour when he was inducted as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2006.

The Bromley Historical Society is honoured to welcome Fred Blackstein and have him share his firsthand knowledge of the the Ottawa River and its watershed. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.
