About the event

Arnprior to Australia and Beyond: Frank Grace's Life in Lacrosse.

The Ottawa Valley has a rich history of athletes and athletics - from hockey and football to basketball - but some sports and athletes are simply forgotten. The Bromley Historical Society and the Arnprior & McNab/Braeside Archives are pleased to welcome Andrew Holman, Professor of History at Bridgewater State University, Massachusetts, to speak about Arnprior athlete, Frank Grace on Saturday, September 30 at 2pm in the Barr Line Community Centre, 1766 Barr Line, Douglas. Born and raised in late 19th-century Arnprior, in the early 20th century, Frank Grace’s talents as a lacrosse player and coach allowed him to travel the world. Drawing upon Grace’s detailed diary/scrapbook, Professor Holman will speak about Grace’s proud Irish Ottawa Valley roots and his tours of the far reaches of the British Empire as a member of Team Canada and, later, as a coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point.  A professor of history and Canadian Studies, Holman has co-authored Hockey: A Global History (Univ. of Illinois Press 2018) and was editor of "A Hotly Contested Affair": Hockey in Canada(Champlain Society 2020). Professor Holman spent a sizeable and very memorable chunk of his youth at his family's summer cottage on Lake Clear. Open and free to the public, light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
