Valley Heritage Radio offers the “traditional” sounds of the country, bluegrass, fiddle and “Valley” music, with a self-imposed mandate to focus programming on Canadian content, with the aim of promoting Canadian talent as much as possible. Valley Heritage Radio The People’s Voice of the Ottawa Valley CJHR – 98.7 FM – Valley Heritage Radio – is the Ottawa Valley’s first, non-profit, community owned and operated, full-powered, volunteer-run, English-language radio station. The 13,000-watt broadcast signal covers most of the Ottawa Valley, while the world is served via live Internet streaming. Our studios are located just east of the Town of Renfrew, in Horton Township, at 3009 Burnstown Road. The station offers the “traditional” sounds of the country, bluegrass, fiddle and Ottawa Valley music, with a self-imposed mandate to focus programming on Canadian content, with the aim of promoting Canadian and local talent as much as possible. Variety is the key word when it comes to the programs you’ll find, as you’ll not only find country, bluegrass and fiddle, but you’ll hear rock and roll, folk, blues, easy listening, east coast, indigenous, Celtic, gospel, and so much more. We also focus on agriculture, seniors, and all things local, in addition to old-time radio shows for those who love the idea of relaxing to the sounds of yesteryear. What weaves the fabric of the station together is a focus on all things heritage – for this beautiful country of ours, and in particular our own part of the world, the amazing Ottawa Valley. CJHR, like any community project, will survive and flourish only with community involvement and support. It is up to the public as individuals, businesses, municipalities, organizations, community groups and corporations to mold the station into the entity you wish it to be – that is, a reflection of the unique community in which you reside. Station Manager < Back Jason Marshall Station Manager Born in Arnprior and raised on the mean streets of White Lake, station manager Jason Marshall proudly describes himself as a Valley boy, through and through. He has not strayed too far from home for his entire professional life, having spent more than 20 years in the newspaper business in the Valley and Ottawa, before making the jump to community radio in 2013. Jason has been station manager at Valley Heritage Radio for more than 10 years, and his voice can be heard on the air every day whether through advertisements or the programs he hosts. He thought there was no better fit for him in life than working at the station, until April of 2022 – when he became a Dad for the first time. He and his partner Bailey are loving life as parents to Gabriel, who already has a love for music and isn’t shy about entertaining a crowd. A little bit of Mom and Dad, there! When Jason isn’t navigating the waters of parenthood, he loves playing softball, watching endless reruns of Seinfeld, reading, trivia, and he’s never lost his passion for writing. He is also a freelance humour columnist for magazines in the Ottawa and Toronto areas. Contact jason@valleyheritageradio.ca Previous Next
- Andrew Cartwright
e0dd6549-31b4-4eac-b9b0-50ece51a40a6 OUR DJs < Back Andrew Cartwright I'm very fortunate to be one of the few people who can say "I love my job." Radio has always been a part of my life. Whether it was sitting in the kitchen as a toddler, watching my mom sing along to Neil Diamond, or my father enjoying big band music. I loved the emotion it could elicit from people. I was fascinated how a certain announcer or song could make someone focus completely on this little box emitting sounds. I never thought I'd have a career in the industry though, because I hadn't the faintest idea of how to get the ball rolling. Prior to radio I worked in a warehouse, where I'd make announcements over the intercom. Birthdays, well wishes, that kind of thing. I figured that would be as close as I'd ever get to hearing myself in a broadcasting capacity. It's funny how life works because in the same week, two people came up to me and said I should work for a radio station. As fate would have it, an ad in the paper for a radio school in Montreal popped up that same week. It caught my attention, and the rest is history. I've since worked at multi-cultural stations, news stations and on the reserve in Kahnawake. In 2011 I made a decision that would change my life forever. I decided to move away from home (out of province in fact) to work for Valley Heritage Radio. It’s been the best decision I've ever made. Since then my family has joined me up here and we had our first child. Little Man, as I call him. I love this area. The people are inspirational in the way they care about their neighborus and the community. I couldn't ask for a better place to now call home. Join me Monday through Friday from 6 to 11 a.m. and you’ll hear "Headlines making Headlines" at 8:40, my "Joke of the Day" at 7:07, "Birthdays, Anniversaries and New Arrivals" at 7:20 and 8:20 and our "Animal of the Week" Thursday's at 9:40. P.S. Apologies for the "Dad" jokes that cause eye rolls and groans at 7:07 every morning Program The Morning Show Catch Andrew Cartwright on the Morning Show Monday to Friday from 6 to 11:30 a.m. for great tunes, bad jokes, and that laugh. Ohhh, that laugh. Watch for his regular features including hear "Headlines making Headlines" at 8:40, his "Joke of the Day" at 7:07, "Birthdays, Anniversaries and New Arrivals" at 7:20 and 8:20 and our "Animal of the Week" Thursdays at 9:40. And did we mention that Andrew is a champion chili chef? And he has a brown belt? Did you know he survived a run-in with a women’s roller derby team? And almost killed Dai Bassett with a jellybean? See … we told you … don’t miss the Morning Show. Previous Next

- Brian Hebert | VHR
Board Members < Back < Back Brian Hebert Director There are many wonderful fiddlers in and around the Ottawa Valley but few, if any, whose careers are built not only on their playing skills, but also on their mentoring abilities. Brian is one of the best of the latter group. Born in the heart of the Ottawa Valley in 1954, Brian saw and heard Canadian fiddle legend, Ward Allen, in 1962 and was hooked on the fiddle. For 20 years, he played shows and dances all over the Valley with his band, Colt, and during that time, also appeared with Mac Beattie on various radio and television shows. Brian’s "day job" is teaching and, with his education degree and a Music Education Certificate, he has brought the study of fiddle into his high school classrooms, establishing a credit course in Canadian fiddle. He has also taught at fiddle camps and been a judge at fiddle contests. Brian has mentored and coached many young fiddlers and is a tireless ambassador for the fiddle. Among his many achievements is his involvement in the creation of the Pembroke annual fiddle and stepdance competition. Brian was honoured by the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships organization for his contributions towards the growth and development of Canadian fiddling. Brian has three recordings to his credit and has published a book of his compositions entitled, "New Generation Fiddle Melodies.” Brian was inducted into the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

Learn about the history of Valley Heritage Radio, country radio station in the Ottawa Valley. In 2001 Vic Garbutt was approached to lead the efforts of a volunteer board to look into the possibility of starting a community radio station here in Renfrew County. Vic and His wife Linda, co-founders of the station, took the challenge on and started attending all fairs, events and anything to do with country music in the Valley, looking for signatures to support the project. The history of Valley Heritage Radio The little station that could... They were able to obtain more than 12,000 names on the survey. An engineer’s survey was required to make application to the CRTC for a broadcast license and this survey was going to cost $10,000. This money was raised by requesting $100 each from 100 people and organizations. This list of 100 became the founding donors of the station (see full list below). In 2004 the application to CRTC was approved and our 98.7 FM frequency was awarded. The next task was to raise the funds necessary to get the broadcast equipment and find a home for the station. The station in order to apply for a Trillium Grant required an elected board, not a volunteer board, so the founding donors were assembled to elect a new board of directors. After researching different locations (Gillan Road in Renfrew, Arnprior and others), a decision was finally made to rent the old Mack MacKenzie body shop on Burnstown Road. Studio construction and clean-up in this old automobile body shop began immediately. The Valley Folks Respond We needed approximately $337,000 to purchase the broadcast equipment. We researched many different options to borrow the money, but as with most new business start-ups, we were not able to to secure the funds. We then turned to the people of the Ottawa Valley and requested $1,000 loans at 6% interest. The Valley people responded and started lending VHR the money required. The board had given the project a deadline of June 2006 to raise the money required or the project would be shut down and all money returned to the lenders. The board meeting of June 2006 arrived and the money was not all secured. There was still $30,000 required. A board member mentioned an interest in loaning the balance, but required 24 hours to make arrangements. The decision to shut the project down was postponed until the following day. And we raised enough money! Due to these loans from the people of the Valley and one understanding supplier, the broadcast equipment was ordered. A condition of our licence was that we were to be on air no later than September 2006. The provision to apply for an extension was in the decision, so we applied for the extension. We would not be able to get on air by the September deadline as we had to purchase our own tower when the original deal for rental on a nearby tower had fallen apart. Due to this change of tower location we needed to change our antennae specs, and it had to be reordered. Valley Heritage radio started broadcasting in test mode for Industry Canada on Dec 11, 2006 and went officially on air on January 15, 2007. The first song ever played on our new station was Vic Garbutt’s Waltz, by Calvin Vollrath.
