Gerry first started working for Canadian Pacific Railway and then moved to work for OC Transpo for almost 28 years finishing up as a supervisor. He retired in 1996 and then started volunteering for Rogers Community Television. Since moving to Renfrew in 2003 Gerry has been involved with Cogeco and done several productions as a community producer and won an award for small media productions for a documentary on Remembrance Day and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2006. Gerry began volunteering for CJHR in the summer of 2007 and on March 4, 2008 went on the air as the host of The Big Band Ballroom. He was one of the originals who worked the afternoon shift along with Mike Cloutier and then hosted the Canadian Country and Fiddle show on Fridays. There isn’t a show at the radio station that Gerry hasn’t hosted, because of his versatility and passion for all genres of music. Gerry lives in Renfrew along with his wife Pat, and are proud parents and grandparents. - Our History | Valley Heritage Radio | Renfrew Ontario
Learn about the history of Valley Heritage Radio, country radio station in the Ottawa Valley. In 2001 Vic Garbutt was approached to lead the efforts of a volunteer board to look into the possibility of starting a community radio station here in Renfrew County. Vic and His wife Linda, co-founders of the station, took the challenge on and started attending all fairs, events and anything to do with country music in the Valley, looking for signatures to support the project. The history of Valley Heritage Radio The little station that could... They were able to obtain more than 12,000 names on the survey. An engineer’s survey was required to make application to the CRTC for a broadcast license and this survey was going to cost $10,000. This money was raised by requesting $100 each from 100 people and organizations. This list of 100 became the founding donors of the station (see full list below). In 2004 the application to CRTC was approved and our 98.7 FM frequency was awarded. The next task was to raise the funds necessary to get the broadcast equipment and find a home for the station. The station in order to apply for a Trillium Grant required an elected board, not a volunteer board, so the founding donors were assembled to elect a new board of directors. After researching different locations (Gillan Road in Renfrew, Arnprior and others), a decision was finally made to rent the old Mack MacKenzie body shop on Burnstown Road. Studio construction and clean-up in this old automobile body shop began immediately. The Valley Folks Respond We needed approximately $337,000 to purchase the broadcast equipment. We researched many different options to borrow the money, but as with most new business start-ups, we were not able to to secure the funds. We then turned to the people of the Ottawa Valley and requested $1,000 loans at 6% interest. The Valley people responded and started lending VHR the money required. The board had given the project a deadline of June 2006 to raise the money required or the project would be shut down and all money returned to the lenders. The board meeting of June 2006 arrived and the money was not all secured. There was still $30,000 required. A board member mentioned an interest in loaning the balance, but required 24 hours to make arrangements. The decision to shut the project down was postponed until the following day. And we raised enough money! Due to these loans from the people of the Valley and one understanding supplier, the broadcast equipment was ordered. A condition of our licence was that we were to be on air no later than September 2006. The provision to apply for an extension was in the decision, so we applied for the extension. We would not be able to get on air by the September deadline as we had to purchase our own tower when the original deal for rental on a nearby tower had fallen apart. Due to this change of tower location we needed to change our antennae specs, and it had to be reordered. Valley Heritage radio started broadcasting in test mode for Industry Canada on Dec 11, 2006 and went officially on air on January 15, 2007. The first song ever played on our new station was Vic Garbutt’s Waltz, by Calvin Vollrath. His passion and knowledge of the game at the local and pro level has translated into an entertaining and informative program each Wednesday afternoon through the hockey season. Geoff’s knack of finding interesting guests has helped to grow an audience of Ottawa Valley hockey fans who want to learn more about hockey from the grassroots level to the NHL and beyond. For close to three decades, Geoff has been connected to the Pembroke Lumber Kings Jr A hockey club, wearing many hats including PA announcer at the PMC, trainer, community relations and marketing director, assistant coach and assistant GM. And he is now the Voice of the Lumber Kings on all TV and radio broadcasts. You’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger Philadelphia Flyers on the planet, and the station expects to have Geoff on the airwaves until a job opens up for a radio voice in Philly. Geoff and his wife Laurie call the Cobden area home. Program Rink Wrap Tune in each Wednesday during the hockey season at 5 p.m. for Rink Wrap, the station’s hockey talk show. 1e33f6d3-51db-494f-9693-ed8a5d1c681a OUR DJs < Back Rob Dodge A country music fan all his life, Rob is in his element spinning tunes for the listeners of the Ottawa Valley and beyond. After close to four decades in emergency services – 37 years as a paramedic and 35 years as a volunteer firefighter – Rob recently retired and found he was busier than ever. So, when you’re busy, you may as well be REALLY busy. With that mindset, Rob brought his passion for country music to the station, and launched a Canadian country music program on Saturday mornings. Rob has also become a valuable member of the VHR family, often filling in for other program hosts and sharing his love for music, especially that of Ottawa Valley artists. When he isn’t on the air, you can find Rob at his sugar “shack” (more like a sugar chalet) in McNab-Braeside township, or working the family hobby farm with his wife Liz. The couple have two grown daughters and a granddaughter who, not surprisingly, all have a love for country music. Program Coast to Coast Country There is so much great music right here in Canada, and that’s exactly what you’ll hear on Saturday mornings from 10 to noon as Rob Dodge takes you from ocean to ocean to ocean in this wonderful country of ours. And, of course, that includes right here in the Ottawa Valley as Rob will bring you songs and tunes from your own backyard as part of an all-Canadian program that is always entertaining. Station Manager < Back Jason Marshall Station Manager Born in Arnprior and raised on the mean streets of White Lake, station manager Jason Marshall proudly describes himself as a Valley boy, through and through. He has not strayed too far from home for his entire professional life, having spent more than 20 years in the newspaper business in the Valley and Ottawa, before making the jump to community radio in 2013. Jason has been station manager at Valley Heritage Radio for more than 10 years, and his voice can be heard on the air every day whether through advertisements or the programs he hosts. He thought there was no better fit for him in life than working at the station, until April of 2022 – when he became a Dad for the first time. He and his partner Bailey are loving life as parents to Gabriel, who already has a love for music and isn’t shy about entertaining a crowd. A little bit of Mom and Dad, there! When Jason isn’t navigating the waters of parenthood, he loves playing softball, watching endless reruns of Seinfeld, reading, trivia, and he’s never lost his passion for writing. He is also a freelance humour columnist for magazines in the Ottawa and Toronto areas. Contact jason@valleyheritageradio.ca Previous Next

b0b329b0-7c65-464c-a2f1-dd11406f39ca OUR DJs < Back Jason Marshall Born in Arnprior and raised on the mean streets of White Lake, station manager Jason Marshall proudly describes himself as a Valley boy, through and through. A graduate of Arnprior District High School (go Redmen!), Jason has never strayed too far from home in his professional career. For more than two decades he’s reported, written, edited and managed community newspapers across the Valley and Ottawa including: Renfrew, Arnprior, West Carleton, Almonte, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls, Perth, Kemptville, Iroquois, Manotick, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Bells Corners, Orleans and Ottawa in general. Is it any wonder he has grey whiskers sprouting on his chin? But one thing has never changed no matter where he has worked – his home and heart are in the Valley. Now, only a 10-minute commute to the office from downtown White Lake (15 if he gets behind a hay wagon or a school bus), Jason is back where he belongs – out in the communities of the Valley, working for a company that is all about entertaining and informing people about what’s happening in their little piece of the world. And when he meets someone and says: “G’day, hower yanow?” – they actually know what in the hell he’s talking about. Programs G'day From the Valley Jason’s Saturday morning show shines a spotlight on Ottawa Valley artists, with a special focus on all types of Valley music, not just country. He says, “as long as it’s Ottawa Valley and it’s good, then you’ll hear it on this show.” It’s the only show on VHR that showcases local talent beyond the country music genre. This includes local pop, rock, folk, bluegrass, instrumental, and more. And, of course, country and fiddle. You can’t do an Ottawa Valley show without country and fiddle! G’Day From the Valley airs Saturday mornings from 9 to 10. Valley Voices Join Jason for an hour each Wednesday starting at 12:15 (right after the noon news) and you’ll hear live music from some of the Ottawa Valley’s most talented musicians, but there’s more to the show than just music. Jason speaks candidly with each guest, bringing you an up close and personal look at the artist and person behind the voice. It’s all simulcast on Facebook, so you can watch it live or later, and see the one-on-one chat that takes place live on our Thomas Cavanagh Stage. Previous Next
