CONTACT US in memoriam - Jim Long Each year in conjunction with our annual Radiothon, the station wraps up the fundraiser with the Jim Long Memorial Round-Up Dance. It’s named after Jim Long – a person who left his thumbprint not only on Valley Heritage Radio, but also on the country music scene across the Ottawa Valley. Jim left this world August 11, 2018, but his memory lives on at VHR. He began as a volunteer and was a member of the VHR Board of Directors. That grew into a full-time job as Events and Volunteer Co-ordinator, a fill-in DJ, and the station’s radio bingo caller. But Jim was more than that to us here at the station. He was a big brother ... a father ... a friend ... a confidant ... a resource ... and an ambassador. He was a fountain of information about country music ... and was also quick to share a story about life. And even quicker to share a laugh and a smile. Jim epitomized what volunteering at VHR is all about, as he was the first to put his hand up to work at an event BEFORE he was an employee. And he did the same when he was on the payroll. In addition to his 40-hour a week job with the radio station, he would often volunteer dozens more hours a week to represent VHR in the community. In addition to his volunteer work at VHR, he was also a long-time volunteer with the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame, including several terms as President. He gave of his time. And his skill. And his passion. And asked for very little in return. Jim is missed. But will long be remembered for the wonderful man he was and the legacy of stories he told, and stories he left us with. All with one common denominator. They all brought a smile to our faces, and to his. And they will for years to come. Rest in Peace Jim. You're gone, but not forgotten.

Board Members < Back < Back Brian Hebert Director There are many wonderful fiddlers in and around the Ottawa Valley but few, if any, whose careers are built not only on their playing skills, but also on their mentoring abilities. Brian is one of the best of the latter group. Born in the heart of the Ottawa Valley in 1954, Brian saw and heard Canadian fiddle legend, Ward Allen, in 1962 and was hooked on the fiddle. For 20 years, he played shows and dances all over the Valley with his band, Colt, and during that time, also appeared with Mac Beattie on various radio and television shows. Brian’s "day job" is teaching and, with his education degree and a Music Education Certificate, he has brought the study of fiddle into his high school classrooms, establishing a credit course in Canadian fiddle. He has also taught at fiddle camps and been a judge at fiddle contests. Brian has mentored and coached many young fiddlers and is a tireless ambassador for the fiddle. Among his many achievements is his involvement in the creation of the Pembroke annual fiddle and stepdance competition. Brian was honoured by the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships organization for his contributions towards the growth and development of Canadian fiddling. Brian has three recordings to his credit and has published a book of his compositions entitled, "New Generation Fiddle Melodies.” Brian was inducted into the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

A graduate of Arnprior District High School (go Redmen!), Jason has never strayed too far from home in his professional career. For more than two decades he’s reported, written, edited and managed community newspapers across the Valley and Ottawa including: Renfrew, Arnprior, West Carleton, Almonte, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls, Perth, Kemptville, Iroquois, Manotick, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Bells Corners, Orleans and Ottawa in general. Is it any wonder he has grey whiskers sprouting on his chin? But one thing has never changed no matter where he has worked – his home and heart are in the Valley. Now, only a 10-minute commute to the office from downtown White Lake (15 if he gets behind a hay wagon or a school bus), Jason is back where he belongs – out in the communities of the Valley, working for a company that is all about entertaining and informing people about what’s happening in their little piece of the world. And when he meets someone and says: “G’day, hower yanow?” – they actually know what in the hell he’s talking about. Programs G'day From the Valley Jason’s Saturday morning show shines a spotlight on Ottawa Valley artists, with a special focus on all types of Valley music, not just country. He says, “as long as it’s Ottawa Valley and it’s good, then you’ll hear it on this show.” It’s the only show on VHR that showcases local talent beyond the country music genre. This includes local pop, rock, folk, bluegrass, instrumental, and more. And, of course, country and fiddle. You can’t do an Ottawa Valley show without country and fiddle! G’Day From the Valley airs Saturday mornings from 9 to 10. Valley Voices Join Jason for an hour each Wednesday starting at 12:15 (right after the noon news) and you’ll hear live music from some of the Ottawa Valley’s most talented musicians, but there’s more to the show than just music. Jason speaks candidly with each guest, bringing you an up close and personal look at the artist and person behind the voice.
